Pearl Harbor and Saying Goodbye

After the others had gone home, our family had an extra day. The last thing on our to-do list was Pearl Harbor. It was definitely worth going and very interesting. (side note: my biggest blonde moment in a long time was before our trip when Tyler and I were trying to decide whether or not the kids would understand Pearl Harbor I had a huge brain fart and said, "I think I could just explain to them that there was lots of people on board the ship when it hit an iceburg... wait... wrong historical event!" No kidding.) ANYWAY though, we watched a film about what happened December 7, 1941 then took a boat ride out to see the USS Arizona Memorial. It was very well done and touching even for the kids. The museums there are fasinating. My favorite thing to see was President Roosevelt's 1st draft of his speech following the incident. It has his handwritten corrections on it, choosing the words: "Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." Tyler and I could have stayed all day.

We wanted to watch the sun set on our final night, just as we had watched the sun rise on our first morning (when the kids woke up at 5am wanting to go swim...we did!). It was a beautiful night and the kids couldn't help but get one last swim in the ocean in their clothes.
